Mortlach History and Whisky Walk

Presented from Highland Spirit B&B, a historically listed building and the locally famous home of Grant the Coppersmith, lodgings of the Mortlach Exciseman and the old North Bank of Scotland.
You will hear the history of Mortlach distillery, the first legal distillery in Dufftown, where William Grant of Glenfiddich fame learned his trade.
How was the whisky stolen using the flasks made by the Coppersmith? How did Mortlach whisky pay for health care?
A short walk to Mortlach Kirk to see where the Celtic Monks first distilled in 566AD, the grave-robbers watchers hut, the Grant Family grave and have a dram with the Mortlach Brewer. What do the symbols on the 6th Century Pictish Battle stone mean?
A stop at the historic kiln of Mortlach. Learn about the traditional worm-tubs, "Wee Witchie" the iconic Pagoda, the odd 2.81 distillation process and the pipeline that makes the cows unhappy.
You will have a go using some of the Mortlach Exciseman's original instruments to measure the strength/volume of alcohol.
This historical walk is offered by Alistair as a qualified walking guide .
